tips:
Keep your pencil sharp (unless you are stippling).
Rest your hand on a clean piece of paper to avoid
unwanted smudging.
Use a soft clean cotton cloth (t-shirt) or a chamois
to smudge the blended column.
When stippling, don't be afraid to work fast. Bounce the
tip of your pencil with a moderate amount of pressure
against the paper surface. As your pencil bounces up,
move it ever so slightly to make a little dash rather than
just a little dot.
At the end, use a clean piece of paper to cover your work and
erase a nice clean edge.
More to come in class.
Remember, this is a practice exercise. Pay close attention to
the amount of pressure required to make a desired mark with
your pencil.
